If you think it's hard to find the right words to say to your Valentine, imagine how greeting card writers feel. Those men and women who've spent months toiling over the perfect sentiment for millions of strangers are the unsung heroes of February 14. From '94 through '99, David Ellis Dickerson was among them. During his five-year tenure at Hallmark, he told your wife how much he loves to kiss her forehead, and reminded your single friend she's doesn't need a man. Dickerson, now an author and contributor to NPR's This American Life, talked to Shine about the business of writing love notes. Make no mistake, it's all business.

Shine: Lets start with a loaded question. Do men and women shop for Valentine's cards differently?
David Dickerson: The difference in shopping behavior is huge. Women will go to stores to browse and relax. Men, for the most part, want to get in and get out. So guys gravitate to the most obvious cards: the biggest, showiest, most expensive looking one on the rack. The funny thing is that because it's more expensive, it's going to be surprisingly mushy on the inside.

S: So the puffy, glittery cards usually are more sentimental?
DD: Actually, we in the business call it 'flitter': the glittery cards, or the flower-shaped ones or anything with a cutout or a window. Those are more expensive and they usually have more text because that offers more perceived value. Only problem is, the more you say, the more you get into trouble. Men tend to shy away from something that says too much. I once wrote a sonnet for a Valentine's card for a man to give to a woman. One of the stanzas went "I shouldn't wake you, but I can't resist/I feel such love, I don't know what to do/And your forehead is just begging to be kissed..."

S: Those are bold words coming from a stranger.
DD: It tanked, because no guy wants to stand in the shop and weigh the meaning of those words. But if it was written as a wife to her husband it might have worked.

S: So men look for flash when they're buying a Valentine, and women want Shakespeare?
DD: Women are more complicated than men. There's more nuance-sentimental, humor it runs the gamut, but they're more likely to read every card.

S: Are there any words writers are banned from using on a Valentine?
DD: We tried to avoid 'soul mate terminology' because you don't know how well a couple is going to know each other or how well they're getting along. Some one might not feel comfortable using the word 'love' which is where the word 'special' comes in. You'll see that again and again on greeting cards: "for a special mom" or "for a special person." The word special can mean anything from "you're the most beautiful person to me" to "I'm glad I don't live that close to you anymore."

S: Are there any images that don't work on a Valentine?
DD: People tend to not buy a card if the people on cover don't look like them. That's why there are animals on so many cards. People may feel more a squirrel or a monkey at heart, compared to another human who doesn't look like them. There's also the cartoon person of indeterminate gender you may have seen on cards.

S: Most traditional Valentine's cards seen to cater to heterosexual couples. Did that change while you were working at Hallmark in the '90s?
DD: Not as a directive while I was there, but there was a writer I worked with who would try to keep her cards gender-neutral. There are tricks for making cards more generic to appeal to a wider audience.

S: Tricks?
DD: If you see a card that starts "Thought you'd" instead of "I thought you'd" it's a way of widening the audience so the card can be from more than one person.

S: So your sitting in Kansas City, Missouri, at Hallmark's headquarters, and you get word that it's time get cracking on Valentines. Now what?
DD: We'd get a list of price points. Say, they need 20 cards at the $1.99 price point, 20 more at $5.99, those price points would guide what we'd write. There were also codes for certain kinds of formats they'd want written, like they'd ask for a "HMYM" which was a "How Much You Mean to Me" card. I'm a humor writer so I'd write the comedy cards but we all had to do our time with the serious cards, which are written in verse. So for next three weeks, we're writing, often with a rhyming dictionary at our side.

S: Are all greeting card writers humorists?
DD: There are lot of routes to break into the industry. A lot of people come from advertising, but I worked with one person who study ancient Greek and another who was a pizza delivery guy before he started at Hallmark.

S: How much are you expected to write in a day?
DD: I could write up to 20 cards a day but there's a 90 percent rejection rate so only a few of them would make it out into the world.

S: So there's a lot of failed attempts at Valentines. Did you write any greatest hits during your Hallmark tenure?
DD: I had one runaway hit with a verse that ended with, "I love my husband all the time and I just hope he knows." That one particular phrasing had never shown up on other cards and it spoke to a lot of women.

S: What kind of Valentine card is going to speak to you this holiday?
DD: I'll be writing my own, only because I know how to do it. Most greeting card writers never buy cards. But whether it's my own words or not, I still find greeting cards tremendously charming. That's why card sales are still doing well--people like mementos and keepsakes. There's something really powerful about holding a folded piece of paper that a bunch of people produced, as opposed to a message someone posted on your Facebook wall.

This is sort of advertise-y, but I love sending cards with my kids’ pictures on them. I’ve used Treat.com to send sympathy cards, birthday cards, and thank you cards throughout the year. For Mother's day last year the BM was leaving town for 3 weeks the day before. SO I took all the pics of the kids (without adults) that we had and had them copied. I then made a kazillion phone calls, I called BM's siblings, mother, aunts, grandma looking for a picture of her with the kids either both or individually, no one had one! SO I went ahead and had the kids make a pop up card collage with all their pictures for mom for mothers day, one card each. I thought this would be a great gift to be able to pack and take on a holiday to meet her bf's family. She would then have pictures of her kids to show everyone....
BOY WAS I WRONG! She ripped them up and threw them out because all the pics were of the kids doing things with us! (Even though we weren't in ANY picture). The kids were heartbroken as they were SO proud of these cards!
SO What if anything do I do for Mom for Mother's day? (she does NOTHING for Father's day because apparently that is now my duty). I don't want to spend a lot of money, but it seems that is all she is interested in, "how much" did the gift cost? I don't want the kids heartbroken again this year...and then I wonder, isn't it now "boyfriends duty"?
I had many years, when my step-kids were younger, that we would go to great effort to make special, thoughtful gifts for their mom for Mother's Day. The upper end of Charles Street in Baltimore, Maryland, was once dotted with basket houses where pungent coffee and sweet Italian soft drinks blended with heaping helpings of live folk music. At the end of each set, the performer passed a wicker basket through the audience. Individuals would drop in whatever coins they thought the performance was worth. It was all very democratic. Nearly anyone who wanted to stop by to play or sing performed a four-song set, then passed the basket.

One of the regulars was an elderly man with the home-spun name of Virgil Sturgill. He'd arrive every Saturday afternoon and play mountain songs on a plucked dulcimer. His voice was like a asthmatic hound dog stuck in a well, but he was "authentic" and the beatnik audience loved him. Besides that, he KNEW Jean Ritchie and that made him somewhat of a celebrity. To everyone who knew anything about authentic folk music, Jean Ritchie was the undisputed queen.

I got to know Virgil pretty well. He told me endless stories about growing up in the mountains and about his father, who he said could play the banjo before he could even talk. But the stories I liked best were the ones Virgil told about Jean Ritchie.

"See this turkey quill?" Virgil once said to me. "Me and Jean are the only ones who play the dulcimer with a quill. Most people use a guitar pick or their fingernails. But me and Jean still use a turkey quill. That's the way they used to do it in the hills."

Virgil died in 1965, but Jean Ritchie is still going strong. She is one of the legends of folk music along with the likes of Josh White, Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. She was singing to an audience long before folk music became generally fashionable. And, though nearly 80 years old, she still performs in concert.

Jean Ritchie was born in 1922 in Viper, Kentucky, the youngest of the 14 children of Balis and Abigail Ritchie. Her family were poor farmers, but what they lacked in money they more than made up for in music. Their Scot-Irish heritage was rich in songs sung by generations of mountain people, tucked away from the world in the remote hollows and valleys of Appalachia. Jean was the beneficiary of this bottomless well of material which she absorbed like a roll of paper towels drinks in a spill.

Jean's father encouraged music making in all his children and the whole family sang and played together. Balis taught her to play the mountain (or plucked) dulcimer when she was five or six years old. The instrument fitted her small lap well. It's narrow, fretted finger board did not intimidate tiny fingers and it's three strings were easy to control. Two of the strings were tuned in unison and played the melody. The third was a drone, like a five-string banjo. She strummed it like her father taught her -- with a turkey quill. She also learned another trick early on. She strummed toward herself, not away like many other players. And she also learned to sing one melody while she strummed a counter melody on the dulcimer, creating a kind of duet with herself.

In her early days at home, little Jean learned all the sad old English ballads that her ancestors had brought with them when they came to the New World. She learned the made up songs they sang while at work or play. She learned the hymns that they sang in the little board church down the road. She learned the instrumentals -- the dances and reels and jigs that they danced to at weddings and ice cream socials.

She took all these things with her when she went to college -- a rare event for a woman in the mountains in the 30s. Four years later she graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a social work degree from the University of Kentucky. Then she went to New York to work in the Henry Street Settlement, where she used her songs to entertain children. Of course, the kids were delighted but there was more ahead for Jean. The New York folk music scene soon discovered her and she became its darling. She had all the qualifications the intellectuals were looking for: she was a woman, had been born and raised in Appalachia, knew a lot of authentic folk songs, and played a little-known instrument.

Jean was asked to play formal recitals and concerts. New York ate it up. Her first formal concert was in 1948 at the Little Greenwich Mews Theatre. After that, Jean became a busy performer.

In 1950, Ritchie married photographer George Pickow and the union endures to this day. Two years later, she recorded her first solo album and received the Fulbright award to study folk music in the British Isles. In 1955 her first book, "Singing Family of the Cumberlands" was published.

When general interest in folk music became widespread in the early 60s, traditional Jean Ritchie fit in perfectly. She played concert dates at colleges throughout America and abroad, and appeared on television. Intellectuals still considered her the essence of the true folk artist, unlike the urban folk singers who were then in vogue. For this reason, she never approached the popularity of the slicker singers like The Kingston Trio, Judy Collins, or Peter, Paul and Mary.

One night in 1962, I had the privilege of seeing Jean Ritchie perform at the Village Gate in Greenwich Village. The place was crowded. It was a hot summer night and the air conditioning must have been on the fritz because it was like an oven inside the hall. Members of the audience furiously fanned themselves with whatever was available.

Then it became deathly quiet. A lone spotlight shone on stage as Jean Ritchie strode out, dulcimer in hand, sat down and began to sing the songs of her childhood. In spite of the heat, all paper rustling stopped. All ears were concentrated on the music of a living legend. All hearts were returned to a simpler time of horses and wagons, of family reunions and golden harvests.

And, yes. Virgil Sturgill was right. Jean Ritchie played the dulcimer with a turkey quill. Whether she still does, I don't know. I haven't seen her perform in years. But I imagine, considering the songs she's sung, that the poor old turkey must be getting pretty bald.
